The Perfect Everyday Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs Petal to the Metal Sasha Shoulder Bag

Finding a handbag worthy of being deemed the perfect everyday bag is a tall order. First, it must be roomy enough to accommodate all of life's daily essentials (including wallet, cosmetics case, cell phone, iPod, sunglasses, gum, book, magazine, umbrella, a change of shoes, contraband snacks for the movie theatre and a tiny rat-like dog) without being so big as to give the wearer debilitating shoulder, neck and back problems. Second, the colour of the bag must either complement 90% of the wearer's clothes or match NOTHING in her wardrobe, thereby forcing her to clash in a delightfully eccentric yet reassuringly constant manner. Third, the bag must be stylish enough that the wearer feels confident carrying it day in and day out. Like I said, a tall order.

I'm always on the lookout for the perfect everyday bag, so you can imagine — go ahead, imagine — the utter joy I experienced this weekend when I came across the Marc by Marc Jacobs Petal to the Metal Sasha Shoulder Bag

Oooh. Isn't she lovely? The lining is pretty fab, too.

The leather is incredibly soft, the moderate size is ideal and there are plenty of handy pockets for stashing all the crap women tend to carry around for no good reason. What I love most, of course, is the design: unique and edgy without trying too hard. The gold hardware ramps everything up a notch and the two doves on the front of the bag (a whimsical reference to old-school tattoo culture) are a brilliant finishing touch. I have to confess to being quite unimpressed with the Marc by Marc Jacobs collection as a whole these past few seasons, so I'm hoping the Petal to the Metal Bag is a step in the right direction and a sign of good things to come.

I bought mine at Holt's but it's also available online here
