April Obsessions

Few things in life are as satisfying as creating a really, really good list, wouldn't you agree? Well, maybe the "few things in life" part is taking it a bit far, but still, I love a good list. I've even started making all sorts of little lists on my new BlackBerry, which means that if we were back in 2002, I'd be totally high-tech! Imagine. (Okay, now I'm imagining all the things I would do if I did somehow find myself back in 2002. Maybe I would start saving up for the Dries Van Noten distressed silver ballet flats I still regret not buying, so that by the time they came out in 2004 I'd actually be able to afford them. Ditto the Miu Miu oversized clutch of my dreams in 2007.) Anyhoo. Are you ready for the damn list? Here are my April 2010 obsessions:

1. Bicycles. Not serious bikes for serious athletes, but a seriously cute Dutch-style bicycle for me, a seriously lazy girl. I love the idea of a beautiful lilac or mint green bike, and me in a sweet floral dress riding said beautiful lilac or mint green bike on picturesque country roads, fields of tall grass and wildflowers on either side of me, my hair blowing prettily in the breeze, a delicious picnic lunch packed inside the vintage straw basket mounted on the front of my beautiful lilac or mint green bike.

Sadly, I will probably never own a beautiful lilac or mint green bicycle because a) I find bike-riding incredible uncomfortable. Honestly, how do people do it? When cycling enthusiasts tell me that you get used to it, what does that mean? Are you developing calluses down there??? and b) I don't live in the countryside, where there are picturesque country roads. I live in downtown Toronto, where the cyclists vs. crazy drivers situation scares the crap out of me, and of course c) if I had a beautiful lilac or mint green bicycle, chances are very high that it would get stolen, since that's what happens to bikes in Toronto. So for now the bicycle thing will remain a happy fantasy.

2. Bloch Giselle roll-up ballet flats in lilac. Well, I call them lilac. Bloch has somewhat pretentiously chosen to call this colour "Delft" cause they're fancy like that. Nevertheless, I ordered these buttery leather lilac beauties from Heel Boy on the weekend and am anxiously awaiting their arrival. Lilac!

3. Pink grapefruit Perrier. Yes, I know it's a little ridiculous to be blogging about sparkling water, but what can I say? This stuff is addictive.

4. Banana Republic Spring Edition candle. It's pink, it smells heavenly (with notes of gardenia and water lily) and I think it's now sold out, which makes me wish I had bought more than just one.

5. This is what came up when I searched for "Banana Republic Spring Edition candle." Oh, Long Duk Dong. Not an April Obsession per se, but hilarious nonetheless.

6. The entire Essie Resort Collection. I'm currently wearing Lapis of Luxury on my fingers and Splash of Grenadine on my toes, and got tons of compliments when I attempted — fairly successfully, I might add — a DIY manicure with Playa Del Platinum this past weekend. Love.

7. Season 3 of The City premieres in Canada tomorrow! Will Whitney make absurdly terrible dating decisions? Yes! Will Olivia continue to pretend she works at Elle? Of course! Will [my hero] Kelly Cutrone steal the show with her everlasting wit and wisdom? You know it! So much better than The Hills.

8. The Gentlewoman magazine. I finally tracked down a copy and was amazed to discover that it actually lives up to the hype. I'm impressed.

9. My new blush-coloured leopard print scarf from Zara. There are no images of it online and I'm too lazy to take a picture, so I'll just leave you with this lovely photo of a leopard napping in a tree. Isn't he darling? Trust me, he goes with everything.

Are You Sick Of Cherry Blossoms Yet?

Yes? Well, tough, because I'm not. Vive les cerisiers!

True to his word, Hubs accompanied me back to High Park the very next day, giving me a second chance to photograph the lush cherry blossom trees in full bloom. And maybe my camera-battery-related stupidity on Day One was actually a blessing in disguise, because Day Two brought resplendently sunny weather, bright blue skies and trees that had somehow grown even more riotously beautiful and magical-looking overnight. I was in cherry blossom heaven.

That's a lot of cherry blossoms, I know. We also saw other exciting nature-y things.

Like ducks.

And geese.

And dogs.

(Even a flying dog.)

And a pretty, pretty swan.

And sunshine-yellow flowers — anyone know what these are called?

Cherry Blossom Trees in High Park (And Why I'm A Complete Idiot)

Hubs and I trekked all the way out to High Park today to see the cherry blossom trees in full bloom, and I was literally skipping with excitement as the delicate barely-pink flowers came into view. I whipped out my camera — thrilled to be using it again on such a photogenic subject after months of Nikon-neglect — and managed to take exactly three pictures before the battery died.

Years from now, Hubs might claim that I threw a little tantrum right there on the hill overlooking Grenadier Pond. Someday, he may even insinuate that I shed a sulky tear, that I stomped my motorcycle-boot-shod feed in a highly immature fashion, and that I hatched a series of morally dubious plots involving battery-theft from the cameras of our fellow park-goers. Heck, he could even imply that the only way he managed to appease me was with a solemn vow that we would return the very next day, all the way back to High Park, with a full battery and plenty of time for me to shoot cherry blossom trees like every other special, totally unique ladyblogger on the planet.

But it'll be his word against mine.

Spring 2010 Wish List

Why is it that when the seasons change, all the clothes in my closet suddenly become unwearable? I know that I must have worn something this time last year, but with the weather getting warmer I find it almost impossible to dress myself these days. My wardrobe is filled with pieces that aren't quite right — the wrong colours, the wrong shapes, the wrong hemlines, the wrong prints, the wrong everything. Spring has finally sprung — hallelujah! — and all I want to do is shop. Here's my wish list for the season:

Every year I hunt for a few perfect, easy dresses that will get me through the hotter months looking effortlessly put-together. The ruffle-hip tank dress and shadow-print smocked dress (both by Thakoon Addition) are top contenders.

I'd wear this nude sequined silk-georgette top by Chloe to brunch with rolled-cuff boyfriend jeans and cute flats — I love an unexpected touch of sparkle for day.

I don't do shorts — ever — but if I did, these army-green cotton shorts from Juicy Couture would be making their way into my spring/summer wardrobe.

Hmm, can you tell I'm loving nude and khaki and sequins at the moment? This 3.1 Phillip Lim sequined silk chiffon top is the perfect amalgamation of all three.

It's definitely not my usual style, but I find myself drawn to the simplicity of this By Malene Birger cotton shirtdress — just add heels and you're done.

I'm in dire need of some new spring skirts, and this grey and yellow printed Rag & Bone Rose skirt feels sweet and fresh.

Love the fun, juicy colours on this Marc by Marc Jacobs Jacquetta striped miniskirt.

This Jason Wu fan-pleat silk skirt would be gorgeous for alfresco dinner dates.

How cool is this Opening Ceremony cape-sleeve trench? Wannnnnnnt.

I'm really loving teensy tiny bags at the moment, and this 3.1 Phillip Lim Adin purse pretty much epitomizes pint-sized utilitarian perfection.

Spring means finally getting to wear sandals again, yay! I'm seriously lusting after these Sigerson Morrison asymmetric python sandals. You can never, ever have too many pairs of flat sandals.

And since sandals require a flawless pedicure, what better excuse to stock up on new nail polish colours? My favourite for spring is Lapis of Luxury, a rich cornflower blue from Essie's new resort collection. Can't wait until this one comes out.

New Toy: Lavender BlackBerry Curve

Given my current obsession with all things lilac, it's no surprise that I fell in love with the delicious-looking lavender BlackBerry Curve 8520 while contemplating smart phones this past week. I wanted to upgrade my crappy Motorola cell but the iPhone vs. BlackBerry debate had me stumped — until I realized I couldn't stop thinking about the luscious pastel-hued BB. I'm such a sucker for colour. My new gadget was a hit at the office this morning: everyone passed it around, oohing and aahing, handling it with a reverence that can only be attributed to the phone's delicate beauty. The words "like a macaron!" may even have been uttered. And the pale purple shade just happens match my nail polish (OPI's Done Out In Deco) exactly. Clearly this was meant to be.

Of course, when you acquire one new toy, it tends to open the door to a whole world of related accessories — at least it does when you're me. So now I find myself lusting after this fab little 3.1 Phillip Lim BlackBerry holder wallet, which has separate compartments for your money, credit cards, travel documents and, obviously, your BB:

Wanted: Chanel Spring/Summer 2010 Floral Timeless Classic

I've never really lusted after a Chanel bag before — clearly I'm more of a Miu Miu/Marni/Dries girl — but when I laid eyes on this floral Timeless Classic, my heart may have skipped a few beats. Chanello! So gorgeous. Kate Bosworth showed off the same print in a sweet ruffle-trimmed dress at a Chanel Rouge Coco event last month, but for me, it's all about the quilted purse. Thankfully, I haven't yet seen any dubious B-list celebs carrying it around [I'm talking to you, Lauren Conrad], which is a good sign that I'll still like the bag by the time I can afford it in 2034.

If only I could spend the afternoon napping in the sunshine, curled up on this beautiful wrought-iron bed with its sweet floral pillows and cozy matching quilt. On my lunch break today, I bought a bouquet of pale pink tulips for my desk and two bars of Green & Black's organic chocolate (I couldn't decide between the dark chocolate mint and the dark chocolate cherry, so naturally I got both). Call it self-medication — it's just one of those weeks.

More Miu Miu Spring/Summer 2010 Shoe Madness

I know, I know. I've blogged about the Miu Miu SS10 shoes already (several times, in fact) but I can't help it. I'm completely obsessed. Why don't I own a pair of these already? The only retailer in the entire freaking country that actually carries them is Holt Renfrew, naturally, and they've timidly ordered just one style: the plain maryjane in either black satin or deep nude patent. I've tried on both versions — prancing around the Bloor Street store's shoe department at length, walking from mirror to mirror, posing and preening — and let me tell you, these babies are heavy as hell, very likely blister-inducing, and they make me a truly ridiculous 6'4".

Of course, none of these minor flaws are the reason I have yet to drop over $700 on what will essentially become beautiful, unwearable little sculptures that live in my closet. No, I haven't bought the ones at Holts because I'm holding out for the really special shoes: the gloriously printed ones in black or pink or red or yellow, with cats or birds or flowers on them and maybe even some rhinestones for good measure. I'm having a tough time coming to terms with the fact that the Miu Mius of my dreams are nowhere to be found in Canada. More disappointingly, even my usual online haunts are coming up short. Et tu, Net-a-porter?

The only reasonable solution to this problem, obviously, is for Mrs. Prada to open up a Miu Miu boutique in Toronto — preferably this week. I guarantee there are enough rabid Canadian Miu Miu fans here to make it worth her while. And let's be honest, if I get a second job and a sugar daddy, I can keep the store in business myself. What a plan. Do we have a deal, Miuccia? Hello? Are you listening?

Girl Crush: Joanna Hillman

I'm sure I'm not the only one who saw this picture today on Garance Doré's website and developed an instant girl crush on Joanna Hillman, senior fashion market editor at Harper's Bazaar. I spent a good long while drooling over her boots, her hooded army jacket layered under that amazing fur vest, her deep red mini and her Mulberry Alexa bag in Oak Shiny Leopard —what a cool, unexpected combination. And it seems she always looks this good:

Love the white lace dress with the little motorcycle jacket.

Again, a great example of layering, and the bright yellow works so well with the murky, muted shades.

She makes this outfit look so casual and effortless. The scalloped mini is adorable.

What a fab white coat and printed dress — proof that winter wardrobes don't need to be all-black and boring.

Excellent glasses and non-overbearing use of orange. Well played, Joanna. Well played.

London House Envy, Part 57,682

I was flipping through the gorgeous, colourful March issue of Living Etc. over breakfast this morning [note to self: Stop doing this. It makes you late for work] and developed a serious case of house envy when I came across the Thirties Arts and Crafts home of Joy Isaacs, her husband and their three boys. Between the deep grey walls, antique framed Union Jack in the living room, chandelier in the kitchen, hits of hot pink in the bedroom, gorgeous "conversation sofa" in Joy's fabulous dressing room and the simple fact that it's in London, there's no way I couldn't fall in love with her home. Check it out:

The glass coffee table in Joy's cozy living room turns stacks of magazines into a design feature. The fireplace, moody wall colour, deep red accents and lived-in vibe make it the perfect place to spend a lazy afternoon.

Love, love, love the worn look of the framed Union Jack.

This little hallway vignette feels sweet and charming. The painting keeps it from looking twee.

I'm digging the mix of patterns here, and the antelope hooks are a witty touch.

Brilliant.

I hold a firm belief that chandeliers work well in every single room of the house. Case in point: Joy's kitchen.

How pretty is this bathroom? The butterfly art adds a welcome pop of colour while the rest of the space is kept muted and serene.

I really love the feminine vibe Joy has managed to inject throughout the house, in spite of the fact that she lives with four males.

Proof that fuchsia and black can co-exist without bringing to mind Barbie and the Rockers. I adore this bedroom.

The hint of lime green from the anglepoise lamp is lovely and unexpected.

Can you believe this amazing sofa was an eBay find? Incredible. And again, the pink and lime green look fab together. I am in dire, dire need of my own dressing room.

2010 Oscars: Best Dressed

Last night's Oscars ceremony was tedious as f*ck, with the exception of the John Hughes tribute (sweet), Tina Fey and Robert Downey Jr's Actors vs. Writers bit (genuinely funny) and Kristen Stewart acting predictably awkward and ungraceful onstage (hilarious). Of course, many of us just watch the Oscars for the fashion, and while most actresses played it safe — no Bjork-style swan costumes this year, sadly — a few dresses really stood out. My top ten:

10. Julianne Moore in Calvin Klein Collection

She's not taking any risks, but her pale shimmery column dress, paired with diamond cuff bracelets and an emerald ring, looks amazing against her porcelain skin and deep auburn hair. Classic and glamourous.

9. Helen Mirren in Badgley Mischka

Impeccable taste, plus a body that's the envy of women half her age. How does she do it? I dream of looking this good in my sixties. Hell, I'd be happy to look this good in my forties.

8. Anna Kendrick in Elie Saab Haute Couture

It's nice to see Kendrick in something age-appropriate — she's been known to wear fusty-looking old-lady dresses on the red carpet — and that blush colour is lovely on her.

7. Sigourney Weaver in Lanvin

Smokin' hot. If I had my way, I'd do without the shoulder brooch, since it competes too much with the satin ribbon-belt, but overall she looks freaking fantastic.

6. Cameron Diaz in Oscar de la Renta

I've never been a big Cameron Diaz fan ("Look at me! I fart and burp during interviews and dance around in my underwear in every single movie I make! Aren't I cute?") but I can't deny that she looks gorgeous in this gold-sequinned gown.

5. Jake Gyllenhaal in Burberry

Hee hee hee hee Jake Gyllenhaal hee hee hee hee. Ahem.

4. Diane Kruger in Chanel Haute Couture

Simply put, the woman's a fashion goddess. One question, though: Where was Pacey? He's always the perfect accessory and he goes with everything. His absence may well be the reason Kruger is only #4 on this extremely important, completely unbiased list.

3. Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab Haute Couture

Beyond beautiful. McAdams looks fresh and sweet and elegant (and absolutely thrilled to be at the Oscars!). What a cutie.

2. Maggie Gyllenhaal in Dries Van Noten

I've already mentioned that I worship at the altar of Mr. Van Noten , and Gyllenhaal gets DVN totally, totally right. Definitely one of her best-ever red carpet looks.

1. Carey Mulligan in Prada

I adore Mulligan's style. She's new on the scene but she's already made some really interesting, fashion-forward choices and has managed to find a balance between sexy and adorable. I can't wait to see how her look evolves.

It's been a while since I've wanted a bag this badly. Mulberry's divine oversized Alexa satchel in Ink ticks all the boxes: buttery leather, seasonless deep indigo colour, gorgeous slouchy shape and no obnoxious logos. It's a perfect everyday bag. Is it true, though, that Mulberry is to England what Coach is to America? That would be disconcerting. Brit readers, please chime in.

Miu Miu SS10 Madness

Behold the Miu Miu Spring/Summer 2010 backstage goodness:

I defy you, dear readers, to tell me that this is not the most exquisite shoe porn you have ever seen. It's my current desktop wallpaper, but still I can't get enough. I'm tempted to print out a copy, laminate it and sleep with it under my pillow every night. I also think it would look fabulous blown up, placed in an ornate gilded frame and hung above my living room couch. Seriously. It's that awesome.

Clearly I'm not the only one obsessed with this incredibly lovely collection, which was by far my favourite of all the spring/summer offerings. Krisatomic posted the super-charming illustrations above on her blog a few days ago, and I was very jealous to read that she's actually seen many of the samples in person and has already tried on the swallow-print shoes. The closer these babies get to hitting stores, the further removed I get from reality, finding improbable ways to rationalize buying a pair of satin platform heels that will undoubtedly cost upwards of six or seven hundred dollars. But honestly, I don't know how I'll be able to resist handing over my credit card in a fit of Miu Miu madness. I mean, come on:

Maybe I'll just commit to one big purchase this season and forego all the other little temptations that eventually add up. Yeah, that never works. Heading to San Francisco this afternoon on a business trip and I have no idea what to pack, since the weather forecast for this week seems so wishy-washy. I'm excited to go. It's been about 10 years since the last time I was there, and I absolutely loved the city, though I don't really remember the specifics — in my mind, that first trip is a blur of delicious burritos (for practically every meal) and wandering around Fisherman's Wharf buying postcards that I would never send and, inexplicably, a little toy stuffed otter holding a crab. Naturally, I'm hoping this visit will produce slightly more substantial memories.

Any restaurant/café/bar/shopping recommendations? Please share!

Sophie Dahl and Vogue: Voluptuous Delights Indeed

Thanks to an office move, I had the distinct pleasure of working from home today and man, do I ever need to figure out how to do that more often. I got stuff done, ran some necessary errands, made a nice lunch for myself, enjoyed the sunshine streaming in through the windows (sunshine! windows!) and reveled in the absolute silence of my apartment. Then, when everything that needed to be accomplished had been accomplished, I spent an incredibly luxurious two hours curled up with my cats, a pot of Moroccan mint tea and the March issue of Vogue. Was it just my good mood or this actually one of the best issues Vogue has done in ages? Bizarro cover choice aside (I can just hear Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers in my head saying, "Really, Tiny Fey, REALLY?"), I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of truly interesting, non-inane features inside. I guess I've gotten so used to being disappointed by Vogue month after month that when they actually produce a great issue, it feels like a revelation.

My favourite article was a piece by Sophie Dahl about body issues and her own complex relationship with food — as a former plus-sized model who shrank down to the teensiest of sample sizes and has been defined by her weight throughout her entire career, Dahl is more qualified than most to write about these things. What I love is that she does so quietly, gracefully and with her usual mix of honesty and charm. Her 2008 novel Playing with the Grown-ups is one of my favourite books, and I've been eagerly awaiting a follow-up ever since. I adore the way Dahl writes. She's had the kind of fascinating life that makes me wish I could be friends with her, just to hear those wry, beguiling stories come tumbling out of her mouth. Her memoir-slash-cookbook, Miss Dahl's Voluptuous Delights, was published in the UK forever ago and is finally coming out in North America in March; I'm dying to get my hands on it and maybe even try out a recipe or two. Now if she would only start working on another novel... How about it, Sophie? Yes?

Ahhh, 3-day weekend. Are there any lovelier words in the whole of the English language? Well, "4-day weekend," I suppose, or "trust fund," but let's not be greedy. I'm celebrating Family Day today, a newish, entirely made-up statutory holiday that coincides with Presidents Day in the States and was ostensibly created to "emphasize the importance of family values." I suspect it's actually a thinly-veiled attempt to keep us all from jumping off a bridge in response to the depressing bleakness of February in Ontario. Either way, I love 3-day weekends. Government WIN.

Naturally, I'm observing Family Day by holing up like a recluse, trying to ignore the leftover Valentine's Day macarons that are sitting on the kitchen counter — there are currently two left, but that could change by the end of this post — and watching Picnic at Hanging Rock, a ladyblogger classic.

I'm dying to try this myself, realising of course that Toronto isn't nearly as photogenic as Paris, but since the whole point is to find beauty in the details, I don't think that really matters.

Valentine's Day Gifts That Don't Suck

So, Valentine's Day, we meet again. I like you, VD (may I call you VD?) because you offer mere mortals a fabulous excuse to indulge in terribly decadent activities — devouring coma-inducingly vast quantities of fancy chocolates, say, or dropping hundreds of dollars on impractical lingerie you will probably only wear once in your life (and for about eight minutes before it's on the floor) — not typically considered socially acceptable the other 364 days of the year. And goodness knows I'm a fan of decadence.

Because I do genuinely like you, VD, I'm loathe to dwell on the negative, but I really would be remiss in my duties here if I failed to mention the dark side of your reputation. There's no escaping your dirty little habit of encouraging restaurants to double or triple their prices in your honour, forcing foodies (lovestruck and otherwise) to pay dearly for banal prix-fixe menus that are completely inferior to the chef's usual, non-VD offerings. And what about the pressure you impose on the hapless male to find the perfect VD gift, the one that will truly express every ounce of the love he feels for his significant other — which almost invariably leads to a dozen long-stemmed red roses interspersed with hideous lashings of baby's breath? Barf. Why you gotta play me like that, VD?

I propose we make ourselves a deal, VD. I'll provide you with a list of Valentine's Day gifts that don't suck, and you make me a promise that all the calories I consume tomorrow will just float off into the atmosphere like tiny magical snowflakes, settling nowhere near the vicinity of my hips. Deal? Deal. Here we go:

My best friend introduced me to Annick Goutal's Baume Splendide Main when I was in Miami last month and now I'm obsessed. Obsessed! It smells like roses — not a fake, icky, chemical facsimile of a vaguely rose-like fragrance, but actual roses. Pricey but totally worth it, this is hands-down (sorry) the best hand cream I have ever tried. Pure indulgence.

Lately I've been spending far too much time thinking about macarons. Clearly a trip to Paris is in order as soon as funds allow, but until then, a box of these divine featherweight confections will tide me over quite nicely. MoRoCo Chocolat in Yorkville does a very competent macaron, but be sure to call ahead and pre-order since they always seem to be sold out.

I know I poo-pooed the idea of red roses on Valentine's Day, but that doesn't mean all flowers are verboten. An enormous, lush bouquet of in-season pink flowers — tulips, ranunculus, sweetpea — would make a lovely, romantic gift this weekend.

The For Like Ever poster from Village has been making the internet rounds for eons, but I still, like, totally want it, man. Badly.

I'm a big fan of lingerie that doesn't require an instruction manual to operate, and this gorgeous 3.1 Phillip Lim knotty stretch-silk chemise is something I'd want to wear again and again.

The matching bra and silk briefs are pretty fab, too. I love the grey leopard print.

Jewellery can be a very tricky thing to give, so when it comes to pretty baubles, I like to provide my husband with incredibly detailed instructions. [Hubs: please buy me this impossibly cool Bottega Veneta sterling silver lizard-skin ring. It's from Net-a-Porter. Click click click.] See? Easy as pie!

Valentine's Day really is about spending time with the one (or ones — saucy wench!) you love, and there's no cozier way to pass a mid-February Sunday afternoon than curled up together on the couch, watching a marathon of romantic classics. My all-time favourites: Out of Africa, The Way We Were and Love Story. Weepy romance, sexy Robert Redford and a large helping of fashion inspiration — what more could a girl want?

Spring Colour Palette: Peach and Grey

Speaking of peach in Wednesday's post, one of my favourite colour combos has always been peachy pink and grey. That was the colour scheme I used for my wedding, and my wardrobe is filled with variations of those shades. Right now I have a vase filled with beautiful apricot roses sitting on the coffee table next to the grey couch in my grey-walled living room, and I can't get enough of the gorgeous contrast. Naturally that means I can't leave well enough alone — I want more, more, more.

Imagine how exquisite this Coralie bed from Anthropologie would be made up with luxurious, cloud-like peach bedding.

This bleach-dye quilt from Urban Outfitters would look great casually draped across the foot of the bed.

I desperately need to own this grey zebra-print pillow from West Elm. Hubs will be thrilled to know that a trip to West Elm is in his very near future. He loves driving me there.

How sweet is the Gloria's Garden floral rug from Anthropologie? Want.

I'm digging these Moroccan-inspired Medina mirrored wall sconces from West Elm. You could stick a blush-coloured pillar candle on one and fill the room with a lovely soft glow.

This Fluffy Elephant floor cushion from Anthro is way too cute. I'd leave it out for my cats to sleep on.

And their Buzzwords pillow would look fab on my grey couch.

How sweet is this Glass Parlor box from Urban Outfitters? I'd put it in my bathroom to store Q-tips and makeup remover pads,

What woman can resist a great big knob? Har. Seriously though, Anthro's Gemstone and Galaxy knobs are lovely and would look great on a vintage (or vintage-looking) cabinet or chest of drawers.

What's prettier than mercury glass? Pink-tinged mercury glass, of course. I'm really lusting after the Metals & Petals vase from Anthropologie.

Love the waffle-weave Vanity Top towel, also from Anthro — it's printed with an image of an oversized vintage tonic bottle. This would make a great hostess gift.

The silver foil pillow from Urban Outfitters would work well in either a living room or a bedroom, adding a touch of glamour to both spaces.

I've been a redhead, a brunette (ill-advised) and a blonde — every shade from platinum to my natural honey colour — but I've never had pink hair. It makes me sad to think I may have missed the boat on this one.

Both Punxsutawney Phil and Wiarton Willie saw their shadows yesterday, which means we're in for another six miserable weeks of horrid weather. The colder it gets this season, and the further we sink into wintry oblivion, the more I want to surround myself with the sweet, soft colours of spring. Right now I'm most drawn to hazy peach hues, from blush to apricot to pale coral. Nothing seems more fresh and inviting in the midst of this dreary frost than a tangerine dream of a dress, pretty orange sorbet nails and a big bouquet of cantaloupe-coloured tulips . I think I'll wrap myself up in a cozy peach quilt and watch Groundhog Day — so underrated! — until it's safe to venture outside in sandals again.

Cashing in on Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

Now that it's February, and Tim Burton's much-anticipated adaptation of Alice in Wonderland is only a month away, we're suddenly bombarded with Alice-themed collaborations and offerings from companies looking to cash in on the action. Not that there's anything wrong with a little Alicemania; I'm dying for the movie to come out (why hello there, Johnny Depp, long time no see!) and if a tie-in makes sense, I'm all for it. But if you're going to do Alice in Wonderland, effing DO Alice in Wonderland! There's nothing worse than a potentially fabulous creative endeavour that just seems phoned-in.

Parisian department store Printemps asked a slew of design houses, including Alexander McQueen, Ann Demeulemeester, Chloé and Maison Martin Margiela, to come up with a bespoke design for Alice, and Nicholas Kirkwood dreamed up theses trippy heels. They're whimsical, over-the-top and enchanting — everything an Alice in Wonderland-themed shoe should be.

Stella McCartney teamed up with Disney to create an Alice-inspired line of jewellery, and this is what she came up with. Really, Stella McCartney? Really? Even the guy who shot the press images must have thought the necklace and bracelet were lame. "What the... okay, well, let's put a playing card next to these tacky things. Maybe that will make them look like they have something to do with the movie, yeah?" No. Fail.

Thank goodness for Tom Binns. He also collaborated with Disney, and this necklace is imaginative, fun, and perfectly Alice-esque. Smashed-up bone china and teensy tiny teacups — yes! But the rest of his collection is a bit hit-or-miss:

Cute, but a little cheap-looking.

Blech. No, no, no. What a mess.

A statement necklace that looks like candy? Practically impossible for me to resist.

This looks like something you could pick up from Forever 21. It's not offensive, but it's not good, either.

OPI's Alice in Wonderland collection isn't terrible, but I expected more from them. Two shades of been-there-done-that red, one sparkly blue and a glittery metallic? Meh.

Teen Vogue has Alice star Mia Wasikowska on their March 2010 cover, and they've done a great job of making her look suitably bewitched and bewitching:

In spite of the stupidly cold weather, I somehow managed to leave the house this morning (I know) to take a belly-dancing class (I know) so I'm feeling pretty darn pleased with myself right now — and completely entitled to spend the rest of the day in bed. If my bedroom were as dreamy as any of these spaces, I don't think I'd ever be able to drag myself away.

Can you imagine being thirteen years old and scoring a front-row seat at the Paris couture shows? And not because you have famous parents, or because you’re a tremendously rich trust-fund brat with an unpronounceable last name, but because you’re the precocious, whip-smart, fashion-obsessed suburbanite author of a style blog? Tavi Gevinson , a pint-sized self-proclaimed rookie, has transformed into the ne plus ultra of fashion insiders, with designers, photographers and journalists all clamouring to get a piece of her. The pictures of Tavi currently making the internet rounds — blocking a Grazia reporter’s view of the Dior runway with her whimsical Stephen Jones feather bow hat; rocking red lipstick and pouting at the paparazzi; posing like a pro at Chanel — sort of blow my mind. The girl is thirteen years old. Thirteen! When I was thirteen, I was reading Sassy and experimenting with pierced ears and coloured jeans, whereas Tavi is traipsing around Paris in Rodarte and Margiela, hobnobbing with the fashion elite. When Flare magazine editor-in-chief Lisa Tant tweeted about Tavi a few days ago, she caused a minor Twitter uproar:

Sobbing to think that a 13 year old gets a front row seat to cover couture. No justice in this world.

While I don’t necessarily begrudge Tavi her spot at couture week, Tant does bring up an interesting point. For every upstart blogger suddenly thrust into the spotlight and granted unprecedented access to runway shows, there’s a seasoned editor who gets unceremoniously bumped from her front-row seat despite years of experience and hard work. It’s frustrating to think that busting your butt at journalism school, interning for free at fashion magazines and paying your dues as a poorly paid, get-no-respect fashion assistant may never get you as far as the kid with a Macbook who decides to start a style blog one day between homework and bedtime. Good for Tavi for accomplishing everything she has, especially at such a young age and all on her own steam, but what about the people who pursue fashion doggedly for years, who study it and devote their careers to it and do their best to climb the fashion ladder rung by rung? Where are their front-row seats?

If there’s one thing we should all remember about this industry, it’s that fashion is fickle. It gobbles people up one day and then spits them out the next, so what will happen when Tavi is no longer the flavour of the month? Or when style bloggers in general start to lose their sheen? Tavi seems preternaturally poised, so hopefully she’ll be able to handle it gracefully when she makes the inevitable transition from fashion darling to fashion footnote. I’m not sure I would have been able to cope with such a thing at that age, but then again, I grew up in a pre-internet, pre-blog, pre-reality TV fame era. I was brought up to believe that people achieved success based on hard work and merit. Sounds quaint now, I know — but I’m holding out hope that someday soon the sands of public opinion will shift again and we can start rewarding people for talent and effort, not gimmicks. Because frankly, I’m far too old to work the precocious angle.

I'm turning 30 on Saturday. There, I said it. The big 3-0. I have extremely mixed feelings about this birthday, but I'd prefer not to dwell on angsty emotion. Nor do I care to formulate unrealistic goals for myself or boo-hoo-hoo over my rapidly disappearing youth. Instead, in honour of my last week as a twentysomething, let's focus on sweet escapes from reality. Without further ado, my birthday wish list:

1. A trip to Tokyo during cherry blossom season. What could be more enchanting?

2. This gorgeous grey leather Miu Miu bag from Spring 2008. I'm convinced it's still out there somewhere, waiting for me.

3. Sexy, sparkly Chloe shoes. I don't own anything by Chloe yet. That situation needs to be rectified immediately.

4. And some sexy, sparkly cupcakes.

5. A winter weekend retreat. If we must winter, let us winter in style.

6. Gisele's legs.

7. Glossy white painted-wood floors.

8. A bubblegum-pink door.

9. This Michael Kors white ceramic watch. For my birthday last year, my best friend surprised me with the MK rose gold watch I'd been lusting after — one of the sweetest gifts I've ever received — and now I'd like to start a little collection. The oversized white ceramic version would be fabulous in the summertime.

10. A job in London.

11. Et un petit pied-à-terre Parisien.

12. Preferably within walking distance of Ladurée.

13. A Lanvin necklace fit for a princess.

14. Chandeliers in every room (and an electrician to install them, too).

15. Most importantly, endless time with the people and kitties I love .

Sunday Style: Fruzsina Keehn's London Flat

I truly believe that Sundays were made for spending all day in bed, but if this were my bedroom, I'm not sure I'd ever venture outside. It belongs to London-based jewellery designer Fruzsina Keehn, who collaborated with interior designer Alex Papachristidis to create this dreamy space (and the rest of her stunning flat). I love everything about it: the fabulous chandelier, the cloud-like bed, all that natural light flooding in, and most of all, the soft grey tones mixed with glam gold accents. Grey and gold work incredibly well together, especially as a winter colour combo, yet it's not one you see all the time. Totally refreshing, don't you think?

Keehn's living room is elegant and refined without being stuffy. Ideally, I'd like to see a few pops of bright colour in here — once you take away those gorgeous flowers, the neutral colour scheme becomes a little bland for my taste — but the room is calming and beautiful nonetheless.

And check out those amazing windows! Okay, so maybe I'd have to divide my time equally between the perfect bedroom and the near-perfect living room. I suppose I could manage that.

How sweet is the kitchen's dining nook? The unexpected use of boldly patterned wallpaper here is a brilliant touch. I love that it doesn't scream "kitchen" at first glance — it looks more like a cozy little café or tea room.

This is the flat's entryway, which means that Keehn is greeted by a striking 19th-century Venetian glass chandelier and a slice of her impressive art collection each time she walks through the door. Rough life.

I'm not normally a fan of beiges and browns, but these sexy purple lamps work so well against the deep taupe walls that I'm willing to make an exception in this case. Very generous of me, I know.

Wanted: Table Stories by Tord Boontje

Aren't these plates incredible? The red ones were featured in the January issue of Living Etc. as part of a "festive dining" feature, but I would use them as everyday dishes — they're far too pretty to stay hidden away in a cupboard 364 days a year. The enchanting collection, called Table Stories, was created by Dutch product designer Tord Boontje in 2005, and I'm lusting after every last piece.

Just as I can't stand white walls, I'm also not a fan of plain white dishes — why choose something so devoid of personality when there's a sea of gorgeous colour and pattern out there begging to be explored? Imagine the spirit-lifting possibilities of Boontje's whimsical dinnerware on a dreary winter's day. Most of us could use a little injection of fun and fantasy in our lives, especially around this depressing time of year (anyone else finding that 2010 sucks rather hard so far?), and this sweet collection definitely fits the bill.

I love the Table Stories glassware, too. You know what's not awesome about a candle holder with a unicorn frolicking on it? NOTHING. What a stupid question.

Winter Tulips

Ten years ago this month, I took my very first trip to London, the city that would soon capture my heart. I was living in France at the time with an ex-boyfriend, and we decided to venture across the Channel to celebrate my 20^th birthday. I had never been to England before and was supremely excited to discover the joys of London culture and the insanity of January sale shopping. My memories of the trip are a bit blurry — having a blog back then to document things would have been handy — but one of the highlights of the weekend was staying with a friend of my sister’s in his enormous, beautifully decorated Hampstead flat. The stunning space didn’t actually belong to Ian; he was doing some long-term house-sitting for wealthy friends, and I was lucky enough to benefit from his connections. A decade later, there are two things I still remember vividly about the flat: 1) How bone-chillingly cold it was in our room every night (hello, wonky British heating), and 2) The owners’ bold use of colour throughout. All the rooms were painted a different jewel tone, from sexy scarlet to regal purple. The effect this created was rather magical, and went a long way toward chasing away the January greys. As if that weren’t inspiring enough, Ian had also added a special touch of his own by placing small bunches of tulips in each room, matching the colour of the flowers to the paint on the walls. It was simple, sweet and breathtakingly lovely; I’ve had a soft spot for winter tulips ever since. Hubs bought me my first bouquet of the year on Sunday, and it’s made me so happy to watch the buds open and blossom, filling our living room with vibrant colour and the promise of spring.

Sunday Style: Anna Richardson and Blair Mackichan's East Sussex Home

Waking up to yet another frigid January morning in Toronto, I find myself indulging in fantasies of hibernation and hermitry. I really don't mind the cold weather — as long as I don't have to leave the house. It's wonderfully comforting to be tucked away somewhere warm (preferably with a working fireplace and piles of plush blankets) while snow and ice and sleet wreak their wintery havoc outside. Sadly, real life tends to get in the way of my plans to become a recluse, but if I were somehow lucky enough to be able to hole myself up for a few months, napping and reading and baking my way through the frosty season, I'd want to do it here, at this fabulously cozy house in East Sussex:

Doesn't this look like the perfect place to hibernate all winter long, or even just for one perfect Sunday? The house belongs to Anna Richardson, a former stylist, and her partner Blair Mackichan, a singer/songwriter. They moved to Hastings, East Sussex, from London in 2003, and have settled quite happily into their quiet coastal home. It's easy to see that a creative couple lives here. I adore the minty green colour of the walls, the layered blankets and mismatched cushions on the couches, the gorgeous coral-red lamp in the left-hand corner (with a similar-coloured shade on the right-hand side for balance) and the pillar candles by the fireplace. Just add a pot of tea and a stack of magazines, and I'd be set for at least a week.

This is pretty much my dream kitchen. I love the pink walls, the fun, eclectic artwork hung haphazardly, the lived-in feel, the cute stove, and the complete lack of pretension. Can't you imagine spending a whole day in here, especially in the wintertime? It's the polar opposite of the cold, personality-free modern stainless steel-and-white kitchens that so many people seem to want right now. I'd take this quirky kitchen any day.

Another view of the incredible living room, complete with grand piano. Swoon. The red-framed painting against the mint green wall adds a witty, unexpected touch, and the huge, ornate mirror gives the room even more glamour and drama. And the owners have named the velvet chairs Posh and Becks. How awesome is that? When it comes to decorating, a sense of humour makes all the difference in the world.

Anna and Brian clearly understand the power and versatility of bold colour. The deep purple in the top photo provides an elegant backdrop for Anna's jewellery collection and really makes the red pop in those two paintings, while the lavender walls in the bottom photo create a soothing, serene bathroom atmosphere. Don't be afraid of colour, my friends! Drop the brush, step away from the white paint and keep your hands where I can see them.

Have you clicked through Style.com's Spring 2010 Accessories Report yet? As a bag, shoe and jewellery junkie, I love drooling over the best of the upcoming season's offerings and fantasizing about what I would buy with a limitless budget. Here are top my picks for spring:

I can't get enough of this Dries Van Noten jacquard pump with python heel — absolute perfection.

This Aurélie Bidermann braided rose necklace is delicate but bold enough to make a statement. I find myself moving away from the chunkier necklaces I used to love and gravitating toward subtler, daintier jewellery, and this would be a great transition piece.

I'm not normally a big Tory Burch fan, but the simplicity of the shape and the gorgeous, unusual petrol blue colour of this Tory Burch Carson mini bag make it a standout piece. It's also a great size for kicking around on weekends.

We all know clogs are back for spring, and while I resisted initially, I'm sort of loving this Celine velvet platform sandal version — not a true clog, but definitely clog-esque, and I dig that.

Doesn't this Mulberry Bayswater bag look like candy? Mmm, pink.

And this 3.1 Phillip Lim gold bracelet looks like a shiny, crumpled candy wrapper. Which is a good thing, obviously.

The colour of these Miu Miu mary janes is what I like to call Easter yellow, and I am powerless to resist it.

I love the slouchiness of this Sonia Rykiel studded Domino bag. The gold studs look casual, not try-hard, which is key.

How amazing are these Nina Ricci suede peep-toe boots? I picture them with little floral dresses for spring.

As someone who has searched far and wide for a stylish camera bag, I can tell you with utmost certainty that this Alexander Wang Brenda mini camera bag eclipses the competition by leaps and bounds. Want.

Aside fro the delicious orange suede, the best part of these is the name: Chanel 5 O'Clogs platform sandals. Yes, please.

With a helping of these Giambattista Valli croc peep-toe sandals on the side.

I have a strange affection for perforated leather (don't ask), so this Marni perforated leather bag is a must-have. Or must-fantasize-about, at the very least.

How incredible is the colour of this Tom Binns blue crystal necklace? It just glows.

Yes YES YES to this Dries Van Noten metallic python pump.

So Long, 2009

Today is the last day of 2009, and I'm home alone with a mile-long list of things to do before the party tonight but lacking the will to accomplish any of them quite yet. Instead, I'm contemplating this past year and wondering what the next will bring. 2009 was particularly rough for a lot of people, and I've certainly had my ups and downs over the last 12 months. I bought my first home; celebrated my one-year wedding anniversary; became obsessed with decorating; switched jobs; realized the new job wasn't at all what I expected; felt lucky even to have a job considering the dire state of the publishing industry; travelled to Spain, Maui, New York, Dallas, Miami, Raleigh, Santa Fe, Montreal, St. John's and, uh, Winnipeg; didn't go to the gym; spent too much money on Starbucks, magazines and eating out; made some great new friends in Toronto and managed (mostly) to keep in touch with the people I love who are spread out all over the world; discovered Lady Gaga and Moroccan Oil; mourned the loss of some of the icons of my youth; laughed a fair amount and cried more than I would have liked; watched the sun rise from the top of a volcano; took a few excellent naps; and started this little blog.

What was 2009 like for you? And have you made any resolutions for 2010? I'm not going to share all of mine here, but they include finally learning to drive, spending more time outside, figuring out a way to get a job I really love, and reading the damn instruction manual for my camera so that I can stop treating my expensive DSLR like a basic point-and-shoot. I'd also like to find time to do the things that are really, truly important, like curling up on the couch with a blanket and a cup of tea, watching the winter frost form delicate, spidery patterns on the window and being grateful for warmth, health, love and kitties.

Wanted: 3.1 Phillip Lim Sequined Silk Dress

In spite of the fact that Michelle Williams wore it to an event waaaay back in June — which makes it practically vintage in Hollywood terms — I'm still lusting after this beautiful 3.1 Phillip Lim ivory draped silk dress with gold sequined tank underlay. Williams rocked it in the heat of summer, but I think it's even more perfect as a New Year's Eve dress. The contrast of the delicate pale silk against those gorgeous, slightly tough-looking metallic sequins gives it just the right mix of glamour, romance and edginess. What better way to bid 2009 adieu and ring in the new decade than with a fun, fabulous party frock? Now all I need is a fairy godmother with a credit card and high-speed internet connection.

New Year Cheer: Sophisticated Holiday Décor

With the excitement of Christmas behind us, it's time to start gearing up for, er, the excitement of New Year's Eve. What kind of celebration are you planning — a swanky, dressed-up night on the town; a quiet evening in, contemplating the past year and making New Year's resolutions; or a drunken night at an overcrowded bar, hitting on strangers and ringing in 2010 with a bang (so to speak)? All viable options. This year I'll be hosting a very small party at home, so from now until Thursday, I'll be busy figuring out a menu, stockpiling booze and making sure the apartment is squeaky clean. What I'd really like to be doing, though, is executing a fabulous holiday décor scheme that strikes the perfect balance between "Santa has left the building" and "But it's still technically the holiday season, so happy 2010, bitches!" For me, NYE is about elegance and tastefully festive décor that doesn't scream Christmas. The tree can stay up for another couple of weeks, but ix-nay the red-and-green colour combos and ditch the empty stockings, abandoned gift boxes and all other depressing reminders that December 25 is once again a full twelve months away. Merry Christmas!

I think Santa Claus and Mother Nature must be in cahoots, because it finally snowed in Toronto last night — the first proper snowfall of the season — giving us a gorgeous white Christmas. Hubs and I celebrated the arrival of those lovely fluffy flakes with a 2 am stroll around the neighbourhood, armed with a camera (me) and a flask of whiskey (him). The light was unbelievable. Is there anything more beautiful than the colour of the sky after a snowfall?

Last night, after putting on so many layers we could barely move, Hubs and I ventured out into the cold to check out the Christmas lights in our neighbourhood. It's one of my all-time favourite things to do, and the creative displays of fairy lights this year didn't disappoint. We saw ginormously oversized wreaths and cute little reindeer and even a truly bizarro setup involving an inflatable helicopter — what, you don't know the story of the Christmas helicopter?

Today is all about last-minute errands, shopping for delicious treats to serve tomorrow when my brother and his family stop by for Christmas tea, and a quick visit with the in-laws before settling in for an evening of cheesy movies and stuffing stockings. I love the excitement and the wonderfully anticipatory mood of Christmas Eve; there's always so much to look forward to, so many possibilities. Wishing you all a lovely day and a magical night!
